Pre-surgical Clearance Clinic (PSCC) is an important step in preparing for surgical procedures that helps ensure your safety. Its goal is to help the patient feel comfortable, ask questions and express concerns.

Prior to surgical procedures the staff gathers the patient’s health information through chart reviews, telephone interviews. Depending on the individual’s health and the type of surgical procedure, they may be required to have a pre-surgical evaluation from a specialist, specific testing and or bloodwork completed, or an in-person evaluation by the PSCC nurse practitioner.

During the evaluation, the person’s medical and surgical history will be reviewed, a focused physical assessment is completed and any necessary tests will be done, such as an EKG, and bloodwork collected. Pre-surgical instructions will be discussed and provided in writing.

Some health issues may need to be addressed prior to surgery or require special care during or after surgery.

The PSCC team collaborates with our anesthesiology team, which is comprised of anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists. On the day of surgery, one of the anesthesiology team members will meet with you and complete a pre-anesthesia evaluation and devise a patient-specific anesthetic plan, which could include deep sedation, general anesthesia (putting the patient to sleep), and/or a regional nerve block which numbs the area for surgical pain management.
